Understanding the Basics of Color

Let’s make finding your Season color palette(s) easy. I will quickly explain the various types of color wordage used in the fashion world to make your journey simple and fun.

Warm color– has yellow undertones not blue

Cool color– has blue undertones not yellow or gold

Every main color has a warm and cool undertone so if you like a certain color, don’t worry there is a version just for you!

I believe that once you’ve sorted your palette of both warm and cool colors, adding different variations of the same color can greatly increase your options. Let’s take a look at the 4 most common types.

Soft/Muted color– “watered” down color

Bright/Clear/True color – purest form of a color

Light color– lightest shade of the color

Deep color– darkest shade of the color

Here are some examples of “blue” and “green” going from Deep to Light.

While with some fashion we can match the color through and through from make up to clothes, we can also add variations to our style. Just look at these examples and you will see sometimes it’s nice not to be so “matchy matchy” with your everyday look by using a soft, bright, light, or deep color combination.
