In the middle of winter dressed in my feather down jacket a single feather came lose. Pure white like snow it was no bigger than a grain of rice. I came to wonder why it was so small? It looked like the feather of a baby duck not a full grown one, and so the search to my question was ignited into something unquestionably dreadful. Where did all these feathers come from?

Live plucking – Did you know the grotesque ways in which humans harvest the feathers to fill our jackets, pillows, bedding with something soft, light, and pleasurably warm? Taking a look into the process of how these feathers are harvested here’s the truth and here’s what you need to know.

Live plucking is when humans take a duck or sometimes other species of bird and rip all of its feathers out from head to toe. Now if the animal was already dead and ready to be used for meat that is ok. It makes sense! Don’t waste anything, but that’s not the truth. The ducks are alive while they rip out the feathers and then they are released, that is if they can survive the shock of unbearable pain, and then its repeated 3 or 4 more times maybe more before they are finally butchered for meat. Thousands perhaps even millions of ducks are treated this way for their beautiful plumage all over the world and at this very moment. What has this world come to? Humanity has reached its all time low because of consumerism. How can we be granted such beautiful animals only to treat them this way when it’s not a necessary means for our survival?

Major countries such as China and Hungary are guilty of this, but I’m sure there are more out there that keep it in secret all for the sake of making a profit. Now that you know about the treatment of these animals the question I want to ask is what can we do about it?

Raising awareness of this situation is a must, tell one and a chain of great change will begin, but as an individual we can do even more!

Stay away from down feather products. Don’t support or feed the sales of them. Be the first of billions to take the step forward in stopping this ugly trend created by gluttonous sales companies and consumerism. Even if businesses claim that their down jackets are humanely collected don’t believe it. They will tell you anything to sell the product and raise its price even higher. Unless you can physically see the process don’t trust in them. Instead purchase products made from fibers that are plant based or synthetically made. Don’t throw away the feather down products you already have, instead, use those as a reminder of what needs to be changed. Recycle the products already made in remembrance for what humanity is capable of and what they continue to do. Animals are being abused for our own gain and its time we stop. Don’t attack the consumers who are unaware of what’s happening or lash out to those who are heartlessly plucking the birds. Remember that they work for the company in order to survive themselves and to provide for their family. You want to end the problem you destroy the company at its roots. Stop consuming, spread awareness and the company will fall. No customers no products.
